Cadet Program

Who We Are

We are a specialized division of the Holmdel First Aid Squad, composed entirely of high school students. For the 2024-2025 term, our team includes 30 dedicated Cadets, many of whom are certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). These young individuals play a vital role in the community by responding to 911 emergency calls and working alongside adult EMTs on both day and night shifts. With a Cadet on duty every day of the week, we are committed to delivering reliable and professional emergency medical services to Holmdel residents.

Who Is Eligible To Apply?

Applying to the program does not guarantee acceptance. To be considered, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be 16 or 17 years old and entering their junior year of high school.
  • Maintain good academic standing, supported by a letter of recommendation.
  • Be in good health and able to pass a doctor-administered physical examination.
  • Commit to meeting the program’s minimum requirements.
  • Have a genuine passion for helping others in emergency situations.

What Do We Do?

Our program provides high school students with a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on their community by actively participating in emergency medical services. Cadets assist Holmdel residents during medical emergencies, offering critical support that can make the difference between life and death. These young responders work alongside experienced EMTs, gaining hands-on experience in a real-world, high-pressure environment. In addition to responding to emergency calls, Cadets contribute to the operational readiness of the Holmdel First Aid Squad by participating in training exercises, community outreach events, and preparedness initiatives.

On occasion, our Cadets extend their services beyond Holmdel, providing mutual aid to surrounding towns during times of high demand. This broader engagement not only helps neighboring communities but also offers Cadets valuable exposure to a wider variety of medical emergencies and situations, enhancing their skills and confidence.

What Qualifies as a “Medical Emergency”?

A “medical emergency” is defined as any sudden injury or illness that poses an immediate threat to a person’s life, well-being, or long-term health. These situations often require urgent intervention to prevent further harm or save lives. Examples include:

  • Bleeding Control
  • Heart Attacks and Strokes
  • Pregnancy or Labor-Related Emergencies
  • Seizures
  • Traumatic Injuries

In addition to these scenarios, our Cadets are exposed to other medical emergencies, such as respiratory distress, diabetic complications, allergic reactions, and more. Their comprehensive training equips them to provide calm, professional, and effective care in even the most challenging situations.

Through their efforts, Cadets not only contribute to the safety and well-being of the community but also gain invaluable experience that prepares them for future careers in healthcare, public safety, or other service-oriented fields.

Minimum Commitment

Participation in the Cadet Program requires dedication, discipline, and a genuine commitment to serving the community. Applicants and their parents must agree to meet the following requirements to ensure Cadets are fully prepared and qualified to assist during medical emergencies. Additionally, Cadets are expected to maintain good academic standing at Holmdel High School or their respective educational institution throughout their involvement in the program.

Training and Certification Requirements

The Holmdel First Aid Squad ensures all Cadets are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge by providing or sponsoring the following essential training:

  • Bloodborne Pathogens Course (2 hours): Training on how to identify, manage, and mitigate risks associated with exposure to bloodborne pathogens, ensuring Cadets can perform their duties safely and effectively.
  • CPR for BLS Professionals (6 hours): An American Heart Association-certified course that prepares Cadets to provide high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in life-threatening situations.
  • 240-Hour National EMT Training: Comprehensive training to achieve certification as a National Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), covering emergency care techniques, patient assessment, and pre-hospital care. This must be completed before entering senior year.
  • National Registry EMT Exam: Successfully passing this exam is a prerequisite for the NJ State EMT certification

Time Commitment

Active participation in the Cadet Program involves consistent engagement and dedication to both training and community service. Cadets are required to:

  • Attend Bi-Monthly Training Meetings (2 hours per session): Ongoing training ensures Cadets remain prepared to handle various medical emergencies and stay updated on new protocols and techniques.
  • Commit to Weekly Duty Shifts (4 hours per week): Cadets must complete a minimum of 15 hours per month, responding to calls and assisting with operational readiness.
  • Participate in Community Events (6 events per year): Cadets represent the First Aid Squad by supporting community outreach initiatives, promoting public health education, and building relationships with residents.

Program Expectations

To succeed in the Cadet Program, participants must exhibit a strong sense of responsibility and commitment. This includes:

  • Demonstrating consistent attendance and active participation in all training sessions and duty shifts.
  • Maintaining a positive attitude, professionalism, and teamwork when working alongside peers, adult EMTs, and community members.
  • Balancing academic responsibilities with the demands of the program, ensuring high performance in both areas.

Program Goals

The Cadet Program is designed to instill leadership, accountability, and a passion for community service. By meeting these commitments, Cadets gain invaluable hands-on experience in emergency medical care, develop critical problem-solving and communication skills, and build a foundation for future careers in healthcare, public safety, or related fields. Through their dedication, Cadets play an essential role in safeguarding the well-being of Holmdel residents while making a lasting impact in their community.

How To Apply:

Please Note:

The Holmdel First Aid Squad Cadet Program operates annually from September through June, providing high school students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in emergency medical services. Informational sessions about the program will begin in June, offering prospective applicants detailed insights into program expectations and requirements. Applications will officially open in July.
If you are interested in being notified about an upcoming information session, please ensure you fill out your information using the form below. We look forward to connecting with you!

Parents & Applicants

Please be aware that, if accepted, the commitment required by each cadet in this program is a large undertaking.  It is NOT like any afterschool activity.  It requires a lot of time; training and practice (please see the minimum commitment outlined below).  As a result, we tend to be more accepting of applicants who are sophomores and first semester juniors who meet the minimum eligibility.  Admittance of any applicant who is in his or her second semester junior year or is in his or her senior year is at the sole discretion of the Cadet Program Advisor.

Application Requirement Checklist:

  • Application (link in the following section)
  • Letter of Recommendation (School Counselor)
  • 500 Word Essay (Letter of Intent)
  • Immunization Record (Doctors Office)
